Coach Roles and Responsibilities
Traveling Coach Applications
Role of a Coach:
Webster's dictionary defines the verb 'coach': to train intensively
through instruction, demonstration, and practice. We also
believe our coaches role is to provide training and direction
to our young players through instruction, via demonstration and
practice both in their practice sessions and in game situations.
Responsibilities include:
• Following the philosophy of our mission statement.
• Attend all Coaches meetings and clinics.
• Responsible for CDAA uniforms and equipment.
• Ensure first aid equipment is available at all games and
practices.
• Be on time and prepared for practices. Coaches should
be at practice a few minutes early to have the balls and equipment
available at the start of practice. Practices should be organized
and planned to efficiently use the limited time.
• Coaches need to make a commitment to be at all games and
practices. If your schedule does not allow you to be at 95% of
practices AND games you should not be applying for a coach position
in the traveling program.
• Coaches should designate an assistant or parent to keep
the book. The same team may be played multiple times throughout
the season. Keeping the statistics recorded consistently is important.
• Communicating the achievements of the team and the coach.
If a team places (1st, 2nd or 3rd) in a tournament please have
your team parent have your team picture put in the Champlin Dayton
Press and have your team parent communicate to the Baseball Communications
Director so he/she can have the achievement listed on the CDAA
Website.
• Provide an enjoyable experience. Sports should be fun.
Showing enthusiasm helps build team spirit.
• Provide a safe experience. A coach is responsible for
planning and teaching activities during practices and games in
a way that is free of hazards.
• Demonstrate and practice the fundamental skills and strategies
necessary for the team to succeed in their sport.
• Mandatory that you attend coaching clinics provided for
by the association.
• Establish an outlook within the team that is in the best
interests of the kids. Striving to win is important but winning
should not be at the expense of the teams well-being, development
and enjoyment.
• Treat your players like you would like to be treated.
Never lose sight of the impact you are playing in their lives.
Remember that young people listen to what adults do as well as
what they say. So, make sure your behavior reflects the message
you want sent.
• Be in control of your emotions.
• Select a team parent and communicate to all parents who
that is. Keep open lines of communication with parents by touching
base frequently with other coaches and the team parent. Team parent
cannot be the spouse of the coach.
• Select a Team treasurer if you plan on collecting money
for entering more tournaments or buying equipment. A detailed financial
statement must be issued at the end of the year to the parents
AND traveling director if you collect money for a team fund.
• Keep an upbeat attitude and positive tone in your communications.
Some simple guidelines are:
•Be positive and honest.
•State your message clearly and simply. Say it loud enough and
say it again.
•Be consistent.
•Review with your team members and parents the role and responsibilities
for coaches, players and parents to ensure there is mutual understanding.
